Outpatient medical facility insurance
Outpatient facilities deliver specialized care at lower cost, and each specialty brings its own exposures. Whether you stay independent or join a partnership, we keep you protected with advice and coverage built for the care you provide.
Schedule a Coverage ReviewWhat insurance does an outpatient medical facility need?
An outpatient medical facility typically needs medical professional liability for the facility and, where applicable, its providers, along with general liability, commercial property and equipment breakdown for the building and medical equipment, workers’ compensation, and cyber liability for patient records. Depending on the services, it may also need auto coverage for patient transport, employment practices liability, and directors and officers liability for practices with investors, partners or boards.
- Professional liability. Confirm whether the facility policy also covers employed physicians, nurses and technicians, or whether each carries their own.
- Equipment breakdown. Imaging, laboratory and dialysis equipment is expensive and time-critical.
- Cyber & privacy. Patient records, scheduling and billing systems are frequent targets.
- Business income. Lost revenue when a covered loss closes the facility.

Which outpatient services carry the biggest insurance exposures?
Exposure follows what happens to the patient. Procedures involving anesthesia or sedation, diagnostic services where a missed finding can delay treatment, and services delivered outside the facility, such as patient transport, home visits and telemedicine across state lines, tend to drive the most serious claims. Facilities that store or handle specimens, medications or genetic data add property, pollution and privacy exposures that a standard office policy is not built to cover.
| Facility type | Exposure to plan for | Coverage to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Ambulatory surgery & lithotripsy | Procedure and sedation complications; transfers to hospitals | Professional liability limits; who covers anesthesia providers |
| Imaging & laboratories | Missed or delayed diagnoses; equipment failure | Professional liability; equipment breakdown and business income |
| Telemedicine | Patients in other states; technology failures | Professional liability territory; cyber and network security |
| Non-emergency medical transport | Vehicle accidents and patient handling | Commercial auto limits; professional liability for patient care in transit |
| Pharmacies & DME | Dispensing errors; product claims | Pharmacist professional liability; products liability |
| Genetic & fertility testing | Sensitive data and irreplaceable specimens | Cyber and privacy limits; specimen and property coverage |
How does insurance change when an outpatient practice joins a partnership or health system?
Joining a partnership, management services organization or health system often changes which entity is responsible for insuring the practice and its providers. Claims-made professional liability may end, requiring tail coverage or prior-acts coverage under the new program. Contracts set new limit and indemnity requirements, and directors and officers liability becomes important when ownership is shared. Reviewing coverage before signing protects the practice from paying for gaps the deal created.
- Identify which policies end and which entity’s program takes over for each provider.
- Arrange tail or prior-acts coverage so past patient care stays insured.
- Match limits and additional insured requirements in the new agreements.
- Review management liability and cyber coverage for the combined organization.
Do you insure home health care agencies?
Yes. Home health and home care agencies provide care in clients’ homes rather than a facility, so their insurance is built around caregivers traveling between visits, care delivered in homes the agency does not control, and theft or abuse allegations. We cover skilled home health agencies and non-medical personal care companies, along with related services such as hospice and respite care. Our home health page explains those exposures in detail.
